Something You Already Know

Paul's address to the Areopagus is brilliant. This is the master stroke of his approach to engaging a pluralistic culture – When he finds the altar to an unknown god, he saw it as a sign of the fact that these people KNEW there was a god there that they couldn't identify. That they actually DO sense a god far greater than those they devote their lives to – so he says “I know you can sense it….so let me tell you something you already know.”

It may surprise you, but the culture Paul was speaking to is not so different from our own. If we look closely, we can see little idols to 'unknown gods' all over - and perhaps, even in our own lives.

Sometimes the things we think we already know, are the things we need reminded of.
